Today I found myself in a Mexican stand-off between London's "best" burrito, a pile of cheesy nachos, and a meat feast of a taco. Needless to say - tensions were high, and there was a lot of intense eye contact. This was after all my first experience of the famous "Chilango" dining experience, so it was time to weed out the good, the bad and the ugly.

I spent around an hour trying to think of ways to describe the atmosphere in the restaurant, but in the end all I can really say is that the room reminded me of an american diner from the sixties muddled with a Mexican subway. It isn’t fine dining but it isn’t straight up street food either. Coupled with the waiter's eccentric antics I guess you could say that the experience was like falling into a Mexican Alice in Wonderland.

The food itself was extremely well cooked, and powerful in taste, but I did think that it was a shame how none of the dishes came with melted cheese. What is a nacho plate without a bit of melted cheese??? Admittedly their sauces were shamazeballs, and very unique, so I will forgive the lack of oozing goodness. The condiments complimented the meal perfectly, and the mixture of flavour was actually quite clever.

Whenever I hear that something is "the best in London" I OBVIOUSLY have to hop on over and give it a try. The Chilango burrito was meaty, saucy, yummy yumma and extremely even in flavour. However, although their burrito was good, I would not say that it is the best burrito I have ever eaten in London. I give them great credit for producing an above average meat fest, but I can't give them a golden crown for it. I was not 100% on the rice, and it didn’t really feel as flavourful as it could have been. I want my burrito to have a bit of a sucker punch to it.

Chilango is the perfect place to go for a casual lunch between shopping trips, or a bit of a hungover adventure away from the den. The interior might be a bit confusing to look at, but at least it's exciting and unique. The prices aren’t bad at all (6 quid for a burrito in a restaurant is basically a steal) and the service is more than jolly (all-be-it wacky). I think it is safe to say that I left this stand-off with a major meat sweat on the old forehead, but also a beaming smile on my face.
